What Is ERCP Used For?
ERCP is commonly performed to:

Before the Test
A clinic consultation with one of our specialist gastroenterologists will be arranged prior to the procedure. This allows us to confirm the indication, explain the procedure in detail, and ensure it is performed safely.
You will be asked to fast for at least 6 hours beforehand. If a biopsy or therapeutic procedure is anticipated, you may be advised to stop certain blood thinning medications 72 hours to 5 days before your appointment. Our team will guide you through these steps and provide tailored written instructions.
What Happens During the Test?
ERCP is performed under sedation or general anaesthesia to keep you comfortable. A thin, flexible endoscope is gently inserted through the mouth into the first part of the small bowel. Using X-ray guidance, contrast dye is injected into the bile and pancreatic ducts to identify any narrowing, stones, or blockages.
Where needed, treatment can be provided at the same time. This may include:
• Removal of bile duct stones• Management of strictures• Insertion of stents• Collection of tissue samples for diagnosis
The test usually takes 45–60 minutes.

Aftercare and Results
You will be monitored closely in our recovery area after the procedure. Most patients go home the same day, but you’ll need someone to accompany you.
Some people experience a sore throat or mild bloating, which usually settles within 24 hours. Written aftercare instructions will be provided, and we will arrange a follow-up to discuss any test results or next steps.
Biopsy results are typically available within 5–7 working days.
Safety and Potential Complications
ERCP is extremely safe when performed by experienced specialists. However, as with any procedure, there are potential risks, including:
• Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) – uncommon but the most common complication• Bleeding, especially if a cut (sphincterotomy) is made or a biopsy is taken• Infection of the bile duct (cholangitis)• Perforation (a small tear in the bowel wall) – rare• Allergic reaction to sedation or contrast dye
